Michigan began issuing license plates back in 1905. Back then commercial companies would offer a license making kit. The first actual plate issued was in 1910 and it was a simple cast iron plate with a glazed porcelain type finish and the Michigan seal was done in black and white. It was not really anything with imagination.
Over the next several years these vintage Michigan license plates were changed slightly. They would make the base color something like black, orange, or white and then the lettering white, black, or red. The first vintage Michigan license plates for trailers were issued in 1920. Probably the most classic of the vintage Michigan license plates was the ones from 1976, red, white, and blue just like our flag.
