A vintage Christmas nativity set can be found made from plaster of paris, chalkware, or one may even find one on occasion that is hand carved. Homes were decorated with the scenes, inside and outside, and were found handed down from generation to generation. Over time some of the pieces have been broken, and collectors find themselves searching for one of the lambs or a camel that used to be included in the set.
Most of the figurines that were included in sets were not detailed like the ones that are on the market today, but one might occasionally find a well detailed set. The faces were sometimes found plain, or they were painted, but not very well. Some vintage Christmas nativity scenes can bring a very hefty price at an auction, depending on the maker, the detailing, and the age, if all of the pieces are within the set.
