In the old days, Christmas tree's were a lot different than the tree's you may see on display in peoples homes today. Vintage Christmas tree's had a victorian look to them. Lots of glass angels and ornaments made from wax.
If you want to go even further back, Vintage Christmas tree's at one time were made from aluminum. There were the vintage color wheels, and even a rotating tree stand that would turn the tree around slowly. Back in 1959 the aluminum tree were modern looking to people, Because they were made of aluminum you could not hang up your average string of lights due to the risk of electrical shock. That is where the color wheel came into play.
A wheel that you would hang over the tree with 3 or 4 colored lenses on them, The lights would rotate over the different colored lenses and change the apparent color of the tree.
