Massachusetts is one of our oldest states. Because of this collectors of old license plates have discovered the great variety that exists in vintage Massachusetts license plates. Massachusetts began issuing license plates in 1903, long before many other U.S. states.
The original vintage Massachusetts license plates were painted dark blue and numbered in white enamel. The first one issued is still registered to the same family over 100 years later.
Massachusetts later reversed the color scheme of its plates, making the background white and the numbers blue. The plates then changed to a green background with white numbers in 1928 before reverting back to the original design. Other vintage Massachusetts license plates include the "codfish" plate, the Cape Cod plate and the Olympic Spirit plate.
