There are several different styles of Vintage Rhode Island License Plates. The earliest version of the plate was blue with white letters in 1921 and then reversed in 1927. By 1940 it had changed to a black background with cream-colored letters or numbers and R.I. on the bottom left with the year on the bottom right. In 1947, the colors were reversed and the state's name was spelled out on the bottom with the year between Rhode and Island.
Vintage Rhode Island License Plates in the 60s were back to a black background and white letters, but by 1979, the colors reversed again and this time the words Ocean State were emblazoned on the top and Rhode Island was on the bottom.
